As we enter 2009, our 98th year of operating as a family-owned business, many of us are wishing we had our crystal ball to tell us what to expect of our volatile economy. While uncertainty looms in our green industry and in our country at large, we at Fairview Evergreen Nurseries, Inc. are taking the long view and investing in the future of our company. As you read this, we are in the midst of constructing a new 63-acre container production complex which will expand our product mix and propel us into our second century of growing the “A#1” nursery stock envisioned by our founder, Frank C. Hetz in 1911. This $2 million investment, made at a time when many growers in our industry are scaling back operations, demonstrates our commitment to serving our customers with the finest plant material and service available in the industry.
Our new facility builds on the core operational strengths we have developed during our four generations in business. Our location in northwestern Pennsylvania, 3600 acres on the south shore of Lake Erie, gives us the benefit of fertile soils and a moderating weather influence. But it is painstaking attention to detail that ensures our B&B evergreens, deciduous shrubs, shade trees, container plants and lining out stock are the most viable and consistent stock available in our industry. We root prune, trim, and fertilize for consistent quality. We have an extensive IPM program to produce pest-free plants. We maintain a beef cattle herd to provide the manure that is so essential to the vitality of our soil. And we rest and restore our ground between nursery crops by raising corn, oats, and wheat.
As proud as we are to talk about our nursery, there truly is no substitute for seeing it with your own eyes. We believe our plants sell themselves, and we’d love the opportunity to prove it. Please plan a trip to see us in 2009!
